Are Cockatiels a good first bird pet?

Question by Jonathan: Are Cockatiels a good first bird pet?
I am thinking about getting a pet bird because I have always loved them. I am wondering if Cockatiels are okay for an inexperienced bird owner or should I start off with something a little more simple.

I have one and he is amazing. He’s my first bird too. I convinced my cousin and they bought 3, and my other bought 2!

This depends entirely on the person. Theyre often called “Starter Birds,” but I feel this can lead to someone purchasing one, only to buy a bigger bird later and neglect the tiel. The best first bird for you is the one you think will truly fit your personality. Go to very reputable bird shops, and by reputable, I mean clean, well fed, happy babies that willingly interact with the staff. Research as many species as possible, and dont be afraid to ask about even the big ones! Learn everything about thier individual personalities, noise level, interaction levels, and needs.

My first bird was a budgie. I love them. My roomates first bird was a Sun Conure. Really, the best first bird for you is the one that you feel you could provide the best home for, and whos needs you could meet with great ease, while enjoying thier personality.

They can be an excellent first bird. You need to know they can be loud and messy. I would try a parakeet for a first bird. They can be messy too, but not as loud.

Yes they’re wonderful first time birds. They’re the most recommended bird for first time owners :)

If you’re going to get one though, please don’t get one from a large retail pet store, like Petsmart or Petco. The birds there are RARELY tame because most of their birds come from mass production bird companies and breeders who only breed for profit and don’t care about the birds. And most of the time they’re ill because they’re always stressed out and stuffed in a cage with lots of other birds spreading their illnesses around.

If you’re going to get a cockatiel, get one either from a specialty bird store or a personal breeder so you’re guaranteed at least a halfway tame and fully healthy bird.

I don’t know if you have any specialty bird stores near you, but a good place to find breeders is BirdBreeders.com. You go to that website, go to the left panel and click “find a breeder”, and put in what state you want to search, and what kind of bird. Then boom, you have listings for breeders :)

    Good luck :)

I would recommend a parakeet, because they are not so people oriented. Cockatiels are very social birds, and a cockatiel will want a lot of your time. Parakeets enjoy that contact too, but it’s not so important to them as it is with a cockatiel. Both types of birds have lots of personality and are fun to have around. Cockatiels live a lot longer, perhaps 20 years or more.
