Finding a reliable supplier of exotic bird pet food can be almost as daunting as finding an honest politician; however there is a reliable supplier of many different types of food and tidbits for exotic birds such as macaws, parrots, parakeets and cockatiels and they do not need to be bribed to deliver your birds’ food supplies direct to your door. Exotic bird species are extremely “faddy” eaters and what they eat can determine their health, vitality and of course the condition of their plumage.
Small bird species such as finches when kept in a captive state are not as prone to dietary deficiencies as are exotic bird species although it has to be said they do need a reliable and regular diet of that which would be available in their natural habitat. Finches and smaller bird species are more scavenger than exotic birds and by that it refers to their being able to adapt their diet much more easily than larger bird species.
Exotic birds in the aforementioned species and others which are not mentioned are extremely intelligent birds and need more stimulus than their smaller cousins, otherwise they can become stressed out and highly strung, something akin to a prisoner being kept in solitary confinement. Symptoms of stress and pent up frustration can include but not be restricted to bouts of incessant screeching, pecking their plumage and poor skin and plumage condition; indeed, just as in humans their health condition can be seen by the color and liquidity of their eyes.
Ideally one should place their food (not all of it) in small pet bird toys which double up as puzzles; the birds will apply their intelligence and ingenuity in opening the puzzle toys in order to get to the goodies within. Another good idea is to vary the places where they can find the puzzle toys with their food bits and/or tidbits inside, this will invoke their natural instinct to forage and seek out their food as they would in their natural habitat.
Exotic bird species are long lived and it is not unusual for some of the species which are commonly kept as family pets to live several decades and as many as sixty or seventy years. Of course, they need constant care, a well balanced diet and as a piece of advice regular checkups by a qualified veterinary practitioner.
